IoT Adventures

(Respectfully, the coolest project I've ever worked on)

The coolest project my NDA won't let me tell you about

Who is Jurumani/Tangent?

Jurumani Tangent is a telecoms company in South Africa. Jurumani partners with telecommunications service providers and ISPs across Africa, helping them to better serve their customers, build and operate networks and services, and find a sustainable path to growth. They talk more about it on their website. They also discuss their IoT services on their Smart Cameras page.

By far, what stood out the most—and what made this experience so incredible—was the people. The way the entire staff, form the dev teams to the execs to cleaning staff- I communicated was something special: kindness, respect, and collaboration were the norm, not the exception. During onboarding, I was struck by how peaceful and supportive a workplace could be. They set the bar high for what a great tech team should feel like.

The Project

Sooooooooo... I signed a confidentiality agreement which means I can't share the details about what I was working on.

But here's what I can talk about:

  • Cisco's IoT ecosystem
  • Cisco's Meraki IoT devices
  • Why IoT is quietly taking over everything

What's IoT? (Internet of What?)

It's all about devices collecting data, making decisions, and automating tasks. These aren't just computers or smartphones — we're talking about things like fridges, thermostats, street lights, even industrial machines.

Since these devices are connected, they can exchange data and communicate with one another in real time.

an illustration of devices linked together through the internet

They can connect either through a local network in your home or office, or via the internet across cities or even countries. This connectivity enables smarter systems:

  • A temperature sensor can trigger your AC to turn on automatically
  • A water leak sensor can alert your phone before major damage occurs
  • Entire cities can monitor traffic, pollution, and public safety through interconnected IoT networks

Cisco + Networks + IoT

Cisco is a networking giant, but their IoT division—especially Meraki—is where things get really interesting.

  • Their devices self-configure, self-monitor, and self-heal
  • The cloud dashboard lets you manage thousands of devices from one screen

Cisco offers a massive lineup of IoT devices, from smart cameras and environmental sensors to industrial gateways and asset tracking beacons. These devices are designed for plug-and-play setup and integrate with the Meraki cloud platform for real-time insights, automation, and centralised control across multiple locations.

Several IoT devices in a line

One of Meraki's Most Impressive Products: The MV5 Camera

Why It's Incredible:

  • 🔍 Smart detection of people, vehicles and other objects
  • 📡 Wireless + PoE options (plug it in or go fully wireless)
  • ☁️ Cloud-managed (no need for on-site servers)
  • 🤖 Machine learning onboard (run customised trained models on the camera itself)
Meraki MV camera

Key Features:

  • Runs trained models on the camera itself (edge computing)
  • Privacy-focused design with end-to-end encryption
  • Adapts to diverse environments (indoor/outdoor, different lighting)
  • Simple opt-in for intelligence training

Reflection

Even though most of what I’ve covered focuses on business and city-scale IoT, the possibilities at home are just as exciting. One day, I’d love to self-host my own IoT manager to run things like home security — setting up motion sensors, cameras, and alerts all managed locally. Getting exposed to IoT has opened up a completely new world of what's possible with connected tech, and it's a cool project I’m definitely keeping in mind for the future.
